“I can imagine.“ she smiles “I was worried I wouldn’t be able to find a group the first time.“

He seems really surprised “Wow. I can now see clearly why there has been an avalanche of both indie and AAA class titles made in this.”

“Hehe, yeah. Whether all of them are good games is another question entirely, but that depends on the developer. And the taste of the player, I guess.“ she giggles

He laughs out “Yeeeah, there are some really bad devs around there. And that’s true too”

“Hehe, yeah. Hey, we should probably be getting back to class. Uhm… Where do we meet up later?“ she asks

He looks at his watch and nods “Yeah, we should be going now. As for that… how about here?”

He observes just how much is possible to do in this by drag and dropping and simple scripting, being quite amazed by it “I… I’m speechless. This is… much easier than I expected”

“Well, that’s what it’s made for, I think. Probably also why it’s so popular at that gamejam I was at, since you’ve only got 48 hours to make a functional game.“

He nods “I can see how you could make a highly functioning prototype of even the most complex types of strategy games and RPG’s with this in such a short amount of time”

“Exactly.“ she smiles “And you can do 2D and 3D with it… Oh. Did I mention it has a physics for each of those?“

He seems really surprised “Wow. I can now see clearly why there has been an avalanche of both indie and AAA class titles made in this.”

“Java huh, that’s not THAT bad I guess.” He nods eagerly “Sure think Kate, show me!”

“Alright, let’s start with making a controllable player…“ she says, starting by adding a box into the scene, beginning to demonstrate how it works.

He watches her add the box and nods along

She then adds in some scripts which allow for controlling the box to move it left or right and one which allows it to place spheres in the world when a button is pressed. She keeps going like that for about 10 minutes, ending up with a primitive version of space invaders. “Well, that’s basically it… It’s not too hard, is it?“

“Oh, so C++ is not an option? Wouldn’t this cause optimization hell? I know C#, which is why I’m surprised, it’s not an ideal language for writing something like games… Tho then again, it’s just the logic written in it”

“Well, the engine itself is already completely written, you’ve gotta do some scripting on top, though. And no, c++ is not an option as far as I know. Another mistake I’ve made before, writing an engine instead of a game…“

“Yeah, this may be why it works, I still shudder to think what a game made in pure C# would be like” and he actually does shudder “And well, for something small and simple it’s doable, I mean, I did write that prototype engine for a point and click game using SDL, but it took way too long and by the time it was done, I lost my original ideas and couldn’t think of anything new really for it.”

“SDL huh? I used that for my tile thing too. I also tried to use it for something else for android, but that didn’t work too well. I switched to libGDX afterwards and that worked much better. I manage to redo everything I did in a matter of hours instead of the months it cost before.“

“Hmmm, libGDX huh, I will have to remember that and try it out myself” He nods, writing down the name in notepad “So, can you show me more?”

“That one’s in Java. But it works really well if you want to do 2D things.“ she says “Want me to quickly show you how to make space invaders in this?“

“Java huh, that’s not THAT bad I guess.” He nods eagerly “Sure think Kate, show me!”

That’s the original version of Bucky from the 1940s, back when child endangerment was the most popular part of superhero comics. When Captain America was brought back decades later, however, teenage sidekicks were considered deeply uncool, and Bucky was unceremoniously written off by explaining that an airplane exploded on his face. That’s how few fucks Marvel gave about the character: Not only did they kill him off-panel, but they actually allowed him to stay dead.

That wasn’t enough for 9-year-old fan Ed Brubaker, though. Bucky was his favorite character, and he spent years looking for the issue where he died. When Brubaker found out that issue didn’t actually exist and Bucky had essentially been killed off in a footnote, he made a solemn promise: “If I ever write Captain America, I’m undoing this mistake.”

Cut to about 30 years later. Brubaker made a name for himself writing gritty crime comics, but was finally offered a job as a Captain America writer. Guess what the first thing he did was.

“I just hope their downloader is good. While browsers themselves are not perfect, some of those things can be worse than that” He runs the installer and the process begins.

“Well, I think it shouldn’t be too bad, it’ll take a while though…” Kate says ”How much time do we have left? Maybe I can show you some of the basics on my laptop before class.“

“A while is understandable, but will see, I will keep it on all the time, with screen off the battery should hold” He replies then looks at the watch “About half an hour or so”

“Alright, I’ll show you a bit then.“ she says as she starts up her own copy and begins showing it to him “See, it’s pretty simple, most of the things are drag and drop in the editor, including files. And you can write your code in C# or some other languages.“

He leans in a bit and looks at her screen “Drag and drop? That sounds pretty easy. And huh, didn’t expect C# there, but since you say other languages can be used I can see why it’s so popular.”

“Well, when I say other languages, I mean javascript and some other scripting language called Boo. At least the last time I checked. You don’t know C# then?“

“Oh, so C++ is not an option? Wouldn’t this cause optimization hell? I know C#, which is why I’m surprised, it’s not an ideal language for writing something like games… Tho then again, it’s just the logic written in it”

“Your place it is then” he smiles back and logs in to his comp “Alright, so where is it?

“It’s at unity3d.com. The site should tell you how to download it.“ she replies

“Alright” He puts in the address and moves around the site findinf the download section “There we go”

“And now we wait, I guess… Well, the first download is only half a megabyte or so, but then you run that and then we wait.“ Kate says, watching the download get completed.
